Passing the torch: An interview with Ken Tracey

After decades of dedicated service and leadership in the aviation industry, Ken Tracey is stepping into a new chapter. As the General Manager of one of the largest independent MRO groups in the UK, Ken has seen the aviation sector evolve dramatically. His journey, which began with an engineering apprenticeship in his teens, has taken him across the globe, allowing him to gain a wealth of experience and contribute significantly to the industry.
In this exclusive interview, Ken reflects on his career, the industry’s evolution, and the exciting future ahead for XS Aviation
A Career Spanning Decades and Continents
Ken’s journey in aviation began when he was just a teenager, completing an engineering apprenticeship focused on fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. His early experience supporting crop-spraying helicopters in the UK sparked a lifelong passion for the sector. Over the years, Ken has held various positions, from stores to senior management, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry.
His career took him across different parts of the world, with his first international experience at the age of 19 in Egypt. As Ken moved into customer support, sales, and eventually commercial management in the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector, he became known for his leadership and strategic vision. His role culminated in becoming General Manager at one of the UK’s largest independent MRO groups, where his impact on the company and the industry has been profound.
The Evolution of the Aviation Industry:
Reflecting on the changes in aviation, Ken notes the critical advancements in technology that have shaped the sector. Both the aviation and marine industries have been at the forefront of many technological developments, particularly in materials. These changes have significantly impacted repair processes and operational efficiency.
However, as the industry has advanced, so too have the challenges. OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) have increasingly targeted the aftermarket, creating difficulties for independents in the MRO and distributorship spaces. Despite these obstacles, Ken’s leadership has helped navigate XS Aviation through these challenges, positioning the company as a leader in the sector.
Challenges Facing the Aviation Parts Industry:
Looking forward, Ken outlines some of the biggest challenges the aviation parts industry will face. A key issue is the lack of product knowledge in an industry that is rapidly evolving. Keeping up with changing technologies and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and customers will be essential.
One of the most significant concerns is the decline in apprenticeships within the industry. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this issue, leading to the closure of workshops and the retirement of skilled workers, with no mentorship or handover possible. Hands-on engineering apprenticeships have dwindled, resulting in a current skills shortage and extended Turnaround Times (TRTs) in repair shops.
The Future of XS Aviation:
Despite these challenges, XS Aviation is well-positioned for the future. With the BAE146/RJ nearing the end of its lifecycle, the company has had to explore new platforms. The introduction of the E190 was a challenging transition, marked by a steep learning curve. However, the lessons learned during this process have positioned XS Aviation for future success.
Ken highlights the company’s adaptability and resilience, with procedures being updated to suit evolving business needs. This strategic growth ensures XS Aviation is prepared for future acquisitions and the continued expansion of its services.
Closing Words from Ken Tracy:
“It has been an incredible journey. From my first apprenticeship to leading one of the largest independent MRO groups in the UK, I have seen the industry evolve in remarkable ways. I am proud of what we’ve achieved at XS Aviation, and I’m confident the team is well-positioned to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the future. I look forward to seeing the company continue to grow and innovate.”
